Subcompact and compact (mid-size) SUVs are quite popular among Indian buyers. The truth of it lies in the fact that both segments registered 95% and 83% YoY sales growth in the month of February 2021. A total of 54,850 units of the subcompact SUVs were sold against 28,169 units of the same month last year. The mid-size SUV segment recorded sales of 36,917 units opposed to 20,197 units of February 2020. In the next couple of years, the competition will get fiercer in both segments with the launch several new models. Tata HBX

Tata’s new small SUV, based on the HBX concept, is slated to arrive before 2021 Diwali season. It’s likely to come with the 1.2L naturally aspirated (86bhp) and turbocharged (100bhp) petrol engines and 5-speed manual and AMT gearbox options.

Citroen CC21

After launching the C5 Aircross, the French carmaker will foray into the subcompact SUV space with a new model – codenamed Citroen CC21. It could be India’s first car to come with flex-fuel system.

Maruti Suzuki Jimny

If reports are to be believed, the Indo-Japanese carmaker might launch the Maruti Jimny 3-door SUV during 2021 festive season. The compact off-roader might use a 101bhp, 1.5L petrol engine for power.

The new-generation Maruti Vitara Brezza is also scheduled to arrive near around 2021 Diwali. The compact SUV will witness comprehensive changes inside and out along with a stronger mild hybrid system and a diesel engine.

Jeep Small SUV

Jeep India is planning to enter into the subcompact SUV space sometime in 2022. The model will be based on the CMP platform and could be offered with a 130bhp, 1.2L turbo petrol engine. It could be the first SUV in its segment to offer AWD (all-wheel-drive system).

Honda ZR-V

Honda is working on a subcompact SUV (Honda ZR-V) that will be first launched in Japan, followed by India. It might come with a new 1.0L VTEC turbo petrol engine along with manual and CVT gearbox options.

Hyundai AX1

Hyundai is currently testing a mini SUV (codenamed AX1) that’s likely to see a release in 2022 or 2023. It might share its platform and engines with the Grand i10 Nios hatchback.

Skoda Kushaq

Skoda Kushaq is ready to make its world premiere on 18th March 2021. Based on MQB AO IN platform, the SUV will come with the 110bhp, 1.0L turbo petrol and 147bhp, 1.5L turbo petrol engine options and three gearbox choices – 6-speed MT, 6-speed AT and 7-speed DSG.

Volkswagen Taigun

Volkswagen teased its upcoming Taigun mid-size SUV that’s slated to hit showrooms in coming months. Similar to the Kushaq, it will be built on MQB AO IN platform and come with 2 turbo petrol and 3 gearbox options.

MG Astor

MG Astor will be the next big launch from the British carmaker in the country. It will be the petrol version of the ZS EV that’s reported to come with the 1.5L naturally aspirated and 1.3L turbo petrol engines.

The home-grown carmaker will mark its enter into the mid-size SUV segment with Mahindra XUV400 sometime in 2022. It’s reported to be based on Ford’s VX-722 platform and come with 163bhp, 1.5L turbo petrol and 120bhp, 1.5L turbo diesel engine options.

Maruti Vitara

In coming years, Maruti Suzuki will roll out the Creta and Seltos rival that’s likely to feature a new 48V SHVS strong hybrid system. It will be developed under Toyota-Suzuki joint venture and produced at Toyota’s Bidadi based plant.

The American carmaker will introduce a new B-segment SUV in 2022. It will be based on Groupe PSA’s CMP platform and might be offered with three engine options – 2.0L turbo diesel, 1.6L MJD diesel and 1.3L turbo petrol.

The upcoming Toyota mid-size SUV will be developed under Toyota-Suzuki partnership. It will underpin Toyota’s DNGA modular platform and look different from the new Maruti mid-size SUV. It’s reported to feature Suzuki’s 1.5L petrol and turbo petrol engines.

Jeep has planned a range of new SUVs for the Indian market including a 7-seater SUV, a mid-size SUV (Renegade) and a subcompact SUV. The new Jeep 7-seater SUV will be based on the updated Compass that recently went on sale in the country. Slated to launch in the second half of 2021, the model will be positioned against the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour and MG Gloster.

The upcoming Jeep mid-size SUV will take head-to-head against the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos, while the new sub-4 meter SUV will rival Kia Sonet and Hyundai Venue. Both models are expected to hit Indian roads sometime next year (2022). Speaking to Autocar, Partha Datta, President and Managing Director, FCA India, has hinted that the upcoming Jeep subcompact SUV might be designed on PSA’s CMP (Common Modular Platform).

The same architecture will underpin the new Citroen C21 compact SUV that’s due for early next year. The CMP platform will be produced with over 90% locally sourced components that will help the carmaker meet the tight cost targets. PSA’s CMP platform, however, doesn’t support the 4X4 drivetrain. Well, the question here is “Will Jeep give up its core 4X4 strength for achieving competitive pricing”?

Besides platform, Jeep might use locally sourced engine for its upcoming compact SUV. It could be offered with 1.2L turbocharged petrol motor that will also power the Citroen C21. The French carmaker has already announced that its mass-market range will devoid of diesel engines. When there is a high demand for diesel variants of Kia Sonet and Hyundai Venue, will Jeep India be ready to give a miss to diesel motor. In the European market, the new Jeep compact SUV might be offered with plug-in hybrid powertrains.
